Moving to another country is exciting, but it also comes with many questions. At NetherJobs, we want you to feel prepared before you even pack your suitcase. This guide explains what you can expect when relocating to the Netherlands, from finding accommodation and registering with the local authorities to opening a bank account and settling into your new life.

Before You Move

Accept Your Job Offer

Once you have accepted your employment offer, it's time to start preparing for your move. Your employer and NetherJobs will explain your employment contract, starting date, salary and benefits, working hours, whether relocation assistance is included, and whether accommodation is provided.

Prepare Your Documents

Before travelling, make sure you have: a valid passport or ID card, employment contract, European Health Insurance Card (recommended), birth certificate (recommended), driver's licence (if applicable), and diplomas or certificates if requested. Keep digital copies of all important documents.

Plan Your Journey

Depending on where you live, travelling to the Netherlands is easy by airplane, car, train, or bus. Discuss your arrival date with your employer before booking your trip.

Your First Days

Register at the Municipality

If you are staying in the Netherlands for more than four months, you must register with the municipality (Gemeente) where you live. During registration you will receive your BSN (Citizen Service Number), which is required for working, paying taxes, opening a bank account, health insurance, and government services.

Open a Dutch Bank Account

Most employers pay salaries into a Dutch bank account. Popular Dutch banks include ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, and Bunq. You'll usually need your passport or ID, BSN, and a Dutch address.

Arrange Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for everyone working in the Netherlands. Your employer or NetherJobs can help explain how to arrange this.

Finding Accommodation

Housing Options

Finding housing can be one of the biggest challenges when moving to the Netherlands. Depending on the employer, accommodation may be temporary company housing, shared accommodation, relocation support, housing allowance, or independent rental. If accommodation is not included, NetherJobs will advise you on the available options.

Working in the Netherlands

Dutch Work Culture

Dutch companies are known for open communication, equality in the workplace, teamwork, direct but respectful feedback, and a good work-life balance. Managers are approachable and employees are encouraged to share ideas.

Working Hours

Most full-time jobs are between 36–40 hours per week. Overtime policies depend on the employer.

Holidays & Benefits

Employees are entitled to paid holiday leave according to Dutch labour law and their employment contract. Many employers also offer holiday allowance, pension schemes, travel reimbursement, and training opportunities.

Cost of Living

Monthly Expenses

The Netherlands offers high salaries but also has a relatively high cost of living. Your monthly expenses may include rent, utilities, groceries, health insurance, transportation, mobile phone, and leisure activities. The exact costs depend on where you live.

Transportation

Getting Around

The Netherlands has one of Europe's best transportation systems. You can travel by train, metro, tram, bus, or bicycle. Many people cycle to work every day.

Learning Dutch

Language Tips

Many international companies work entirely in English. However, learning some Dutch will help you feel at home faster, make new friends, improve future career opportunities, and communicate in everyday situations. Even a few basic phrases are appreciated.

Bringing Your Family

Family Relocation

Many professionals choose to relocate together with their partner or family. Depending on your situation, you may need to arrange housing, school registration, childcare, health insurance, and family registration. Our team can provide guidance throughout this process.
